Simple Gulab Jamun
Ingredients

1.2l/2 pts milk
-
100g/4 oz plain (all-purpose)
flour
-
pinch of salt
-
2.5ml/1/2 tsp baking powder
-
450g/1 lb sugar
-
300ml/1/2 pt water
-
few drops of vanilla essence
(extract)
-
ghee for deep-frying
Method:

Boil the milk until it thickens
to the consistency of a thick batter, stirring
continuously.

Mix in the flour, salt and baking
powder and knead to a soft dough, adding a little
more flour if the dough is sticky.

Shape into small
balls. Boil the sugar and water to a thin syrup and
add the vanilla essence. Heat the ghee and fry the
balls until golden brown.

Drain on kitchen paper
then place in the syrup to soak. Serve warm or cold.
