Beef & Pork Recipes - Muslim-style Meatballs

Ingredients

  • 900g/2 lb minced (ground) beef

  • salt

  • 5 cloves garlic, crushed

  • 5ml/1 tsp paprika

  • 45 ml/3 tbsp oil

  • 5 cloves

  • 5 cardamom pods

  • 6 black peppercorns

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 3 bay leaves

  • 1.5ml1/4 tsp grated nutmeg

  • 10ml/2 tsp garam masala

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 3 tomatoes, skinned and quartered

  • 2.5 ml/1/2 tsp chili powder

  • 45ml/3  tbsp natural (plain) yoghurt

  • 450 ml/3/4 pt/2 cups water

  • 30ml/2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander ( cilantro)


Method:

  1. Mix together the meat, garlic, salt and paprika and shape the mixture into 24 balls. Heat the oil and fry the cloves, cardamom, peppercorns, cinnamon, bay leaves, nutmeg and garam masala over a medium heat for 3 minutes.

  2. Add the onion and fry until golden brown. Add the tomatoes and chili powder and fry for 2 minutes. Mix in the yoghurt and water and bring to the boil.

  3. Add the meatballs and spoon the sauce over them. Cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes. Remove the lid and cook for a further 5 minutes.

  4. Garnish with coriander and serve hot with rice and a vegetable dish.
