Seafood Recipes - Hot Goan-style Fish Curry

Ingredients

  • 2 large plaice

  • 150 ml/1/4 pt/2/3 cup coconut milk

  • 5ml/1 tsp ground turmeric

  • 4 dried red chilies

  • 75g/3 oz/3/4 cup desiccated (shredded) coconut

  • 5 ml/1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 15ml/1 tbsp coriander (cilantro) seeds

  • 45 ml/3 tbsp oil

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped

  • 1 sprig fresh curry leaves

  • 2 large tomatoes, skinned and quartered

  • 5 ml/1 tsp tamarind concentrate

  • salt


Method:

  1. Cut the fish into 10cm/4 in pieces. Puree the coconut milk, turmeric, chilies, coconut, cumin and coriander seeds. Heat the oil and fry the onion until browned.

  2. Stir in the coconut puree, curry leaves, tomatoes and tamarind and cook for 5 minutes stirring constantly. Add the fish and season to taste with salt.

  3. Simmer for 10-15 minutes until the fish is cooked, stirring occasionally. Serve hot with rice, papadums and vegetables.
