Seafood Recipes - Prawns in Black Pepper and Mustard Seeds

Ingredients

  • 900 g/2 lb peeled prawns (shrimp)

  • 5 ml/1 tsp ground turmeric

  • salt

  • juice of 1 lemon

  • 45 ml/3 tbsp oil

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp black mustard seeds

  • 1 onion, finely chopped

  • 5 cloves garlic, crushed

  • 2.5 ml/1 in ginger root, finely chopped

  • 2 green chilies, chopped

  • 2.5 ml/1/2 tsp black peppercorns, crushed

  • 1.5 ml/1/4 tsp chili powder

  • 1 tomato, skinned and chopped

  • 30 ml/2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander (cilantro)


Method:

  1. Mix the prawns with the turmeric, salt and lemon juice and leave to marinate for 15 minutes.

  2. Heat the oil and fry the mustard seeds until they start crackling. Add the onion, garlic, ginger and chilies and cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the peppercorns and chili powder and cook for 2 minutes.

  3.  Add the tomato and prawn mixture, cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Garnish with the coriander and serve hot with plain rice, chapattis, chutney and vegetables.
