Seasoning Mixture and Basic Recipes - Dal Powder

Ingredients

  • 100 g/4 oz/ cup red lentils 

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp yellow split peas

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp split black beans

  • 15 ml/1 tbsp ghee

  • 5 ml/1 tsp black peppercorns

  • 5 ml/1 tsp cumin seeds

  • 5 dried red chilies

  • 2.5 ml/1/2 tsp asafoetida

  • salt


Method:

  1. Dry roast the lentils, split peas and split beans in a pan for 4-5 minutes over a low heat.

  2. Heat the ghee and fry the peppercorns, cumin seeds, chilies and asafoetida powder for a few minutes until lightly browned. Grind everything to a powder, adding salt as required. Store in an airtight container and serve with hot rice and ghee.
