Dals Recipes - Lentils in Lime Recipe

Ingredients

  • 225g/8 oz/1 1/3 cups red lentils, soaked in cold water for 20 minutes

  • 600ml/1 pt/2 1/2 cups water

  • salt

  • 30ml/2 tbsp ghee

  • pinch of asafoetida

  • 5ml/1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 5ml/1 tsp chili powder

  • 60ml/4 tbsp lime juice


Method:

  1. Boil the lentils in the water with a little salt for 30 minutes until soft. Heat the ghee and fry the asafoetida and mustard seeds until seeds start crackling.

  2. Pour the mixture over the simmering lentils, cover and simmer over a medium heat for a further 5 minutes. Stir in the chili powder and lime juice and serve hot as part of a main meal.
