Dals Recipes - Mashed Green Lentils Recipe

Ingredients

  • 100g/4 oz/2/3 cup whole green lentils

  • 6 green chilies, slit

  • 2.5ml/1/2 tsp ground turmeric

  • 5ml/1 tsp tamarind concentrate

  • salt

  • 1 small bunch fresh coriander (cilantro), finely chopped

Seasoning

  • 10ml/2 tsp ghee

  • 5ml/1 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 dried red chili, halved

  • 2.5ml/1/2 tsp asafoetida

  • 2-3 curry leaves


Method:

  1. Cook the lentils in enough water to cover for about 20 minutes until tender. Heat the seasoning ghee and fry all the ingredients for 2 minutes. Add the green chilies, turmeric, tamarind and salt and simmer until the raw smell of the tamarind disappears.

  2. Add the coconut lentils and simmer until well blended. Garnish with the coriander and serve with rice or chapatis.
