Ingredients
100g/4 oz split black beans
450ml/3/4 pt water
5ml/1 tsp black peppercorns
50g/2 oz grated (shredded) coconut
2.5ml/1/2 tsp asafoetida
salt
3 curry leaves
oil for deep-frying
Method:
Soak the split beans in the water for 2 hours. Grind to a smooth batter with the remaining ingredients then shape into small balls.
Heat the oil and fry the balls until golden. Drain on kitchen paper and serve hot with coconut chutney.
