Ingredients

100g/4 oz yellow split peas
-
450ml/3/4 pt water
-
4 dried red chilies
-
5ml/1 tsp asafoetida
-
salt
-
50g/2 oz cauliflower florets
-
50g/2 oz peas
-
1 onion, chopped
-
2-3 curry leaves, chopped
-
oil for deep-frying
Method:
-
Soak the peas in the
water for 2 hours. Grind them to a thick batter with
the chilies, asafoetida and salt. Mix the vegetables
and curry leaves into the batter.

Heat the oil. Drop
spoonfuls of the batter into the oil and fry until
golden. Drain on kitchen paper and serve hot with
chutney.
